How I Got Into the Business, Oz Magazine, May 2012: Tammy Hurt – Placement Music

APRIL/MAY – FOUNDING PARTNER OF PLACEMENT MUSIC

Tammy Hurt

How did you get into the business?

My start in film and TV music came from the most organic, authentic place possible. I was fulfilling my favorite professional passion – playing drums. I was performing live on stage with a loud, experimental, instrumental guitar-oriented rock band. After the show, I was approached by a woman from CNN who asked if we could provide some lead-in’s and cue’s (music) for her on-air productions. My answer was of course, “Yes we can!” and that’s how Placement Music was born.

Our first big break came when, by a pure stroke of luck, I met an on screen director for FOX Sports. I mentioned that my company created custom music and he suggested I send him some tracks when we completed our first sessions. Needless to say, our team went into the studio the next day. We recorded on Monday. The director received our music on Thursday – and Placement Music debuted on the air on NFL on FOX that same Sunday.

What are some of your proudest accomplishments?

Within a year of launching, we were commissioned to create an original, orchestral, custom score for Super Bowl XLV, which aired to an audience of 111 million viewers. I co-produced the score titled ”Declaration Anthem” with composer Steve Dancz. The track was engineered by multiple GRAMMY-winner, Leslie Ann Jones at Skywalker Sound in San Francisco. We were honored with two Silver Telly Awards and a Hollywood Music In Media Award for “Best Score – Special Feature”.  We have provided custom music for Showtime’s Dexter, and placed tracks in Paramount Pictures Mean Girls 2, HBO’s True Blood, and the indie film Rough Hustle. Most recently, the team re-recorded Rosemary Clooney’s version of “Mambo Italiano” for Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva.

Words to live by?

Never give up.

PLACEMENT MUSIC SCORES BIG AT SUPER BOWL XLV WITH FOX SPORTS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ATLANTA’S PLACEMENT MUSIC SCORES BIG AS FOX SPORTS COMMISSIONS “DECLARATION ANTHEM” FOR SUPER BOWL’S SALUTE TO AMERICA

JANUARY 27, 2011 (ATLANTA) — Placement Music, a new Atlanta-based company specializing in custom music and score for a wide range of media, was chosen by FOX Sports to create a commissioned original score for its all-new presentation of the ‘Declaration of Independence’ in what has become a FOX SUPER BOWL SUNDAY tradition.  The almost seven-minute piece titled “Declaration Anthem” was composed by Placement Music team member Steve Dancz, who has composed and conducted numerous orchestral scores for television and film and is director of Jazz Studies at the University of Georgia.

“On February 6, FOX Sports will have the attention of an estimated 100 million Americans as well as millions more people in more than 200 countries. There is no better opportunity to celebrate America, and our unique depiction of the ‘Declaration of Independence’ has become the cornerstone of our Super Bowl coverage,” said Jennifer Pransky, feature producer, FOX Sports.  “When producing this year’s piece, we knew the images would have to do justice to the words written in 1776, and that choosing the right music was going to be crucial. The credentials of the award-winning Placement Music team are remarkable and their original score ‘Declaration Anthem’ is inspired because of the dedication and talent of their people. We hope we have created a piece that will stir emotions in every American, and use the Super Bowl stage honorably to remind the world why we love our home, sweet, home.”

“Placement Music is so proud to have been asked by FOX Sports to create music for this very important segment of the Super Bowl broadcast. We are thrilled to be working with Jennifer Pransky and the FOX Sports team and honored to create music that underscores the power and importance of the ‘Declaration of Independence,’” said Placement Music Managing Partner Elizabeth Elkins. “One of Placement Music’s primary services is creating original music on-demand for television, film and other media, and we call on our GRAMMY®-winning creative team to do so. Team member Steve Dancz and his powerful, emotional work ‘Declaration Anthem’ demonstrate the abilities of our team to create high quality, custom music for our clients.”

Placement Music maintains an extensive catalog of music created by established and emerging rock, pop and country artists, in addition to having its GRAMMY® Award-winning team of music makers.  The company is led by Founder Tammy Hurt, award-winning entrepreneur and current President of the Atlanta Chapter of The Recording Academy®  (GRAMMY® Awards) and Co-President of Georgia Music Partners, and Managing Partner Elizabeth Elkins, award-winning songwriter and board member of The Recording Academy® Atlanta Chapter and Georgia Music Partners.
